If you like geology, learning more about North America, and meeting interesting people, then you must listen to John McPhee's Basin and Range, the first book in his Annals of a Former World series. A few days ago I finished reading John McPhee's massive 700+ page work, Annals of the Former World. In his “Annals of the Former World”, John McPhee repeats a story told to geologist David Love (1913–2002) in the 1930s by Love's family doctor, Francis Smith, M.D., when Love was a doctoral student. In this book, McPhee teams up with a Geology professor to explore what is known as the Basin and Range (the greater Colorado area). "Annals of the Former World: Basin and Range" by John McPhee. I think John McPhee captures it best in his series "Annals of the Former World." Dip into that, and perhaps your opinion will shift. Favorite Books: People of the Book, the Stieg Larsson series, anything by Henning Mankell (thanks to Charles Watkinson for recommending him), Love Medicine, Annals of a Former World and so many others. It's not as organized for a trip as Roadside Geology (and it's 42,000 pages) but it is a really good introduciton to selected parts of American geology. Annals of the Former World by John McPhee is gives you a good nonfiction account of geological time (it won the Pultizer prize too).
